Whitening and Bleaching

Keeping our teeth their whitest is a lot harder than it sounds. With all the coffee, wine, smoking and other foods that have the ability to stain our teeth on a daily basis, even proper maintenance sometimes leaves them a little lackluster. Teeth whitening is an excellent way to restore the natural color of your teeth or even make them whiter than your natural color if you would like.

Bleaching only works on natural teeth, therefore, crowns and tooth colored fillings will not bleach. After a thorough examination, we will inform you as to the potential whitening for you specific situation.

Procedure

The first step in the whitening process is impressions. We will take full impressions of your upper and lower teeth. These impressions will be made into custom bleaching trays. The trays will fit onto your teeth perfectly and will decrease the possibility of gum irritation from the bleaching gel.

At home, the second step is to place the bleaching solution in the trays and wear them for a 1-2 hours a day. Within 7-14 days, you will see a significant improvement in the color of your teeth. Your smile will look brighter and younger.

Sensitivity may develop on rare occasions. If this occurs, you may be asked to either bleach for a shorter duration, alternate days or use a prescription strength toothpaste for two weeks prior to starting your bleaching again. Results may vary with each individual, but success is achieved on the majority of our patients.

Duration

How long your teeth stay white depends on your habits. Consuming foods that stain natural teeth like coffee, tea (especially green tea), dark sodas, etc. darken teeth faster. Typically, someone without bad habits can expect results to last for up to 2 years! If you find that your teeth are changing shade, simply bleach again. This time, the "booster" applications should only need a few days to return to a whiter and brighter smile.
